Sherwood WI was formed in April 2012, and is a member of the Nottinghamshire Federation of WIs, and part of the National Federation of Women’s Institutes (NFWI), which is now celebrating its centenary. Being a member of Sherwood WI also means you not only get to attend a varied programme of events and meetings locally, but you have access to a wide range of activities organised by sister WIs within the county, as well as National Federation events and campaigns.
Monthly meetings take a variety of forms, including speakers, activities and social events – a calendar of meetings should be made available to you when you come along, or you can view the programme here. (link) We do need your suggestions to ensure we include the interests of all members, so please either use the suggestion box available at every meeting, or speak to a member of the committee about what you would like to see.
Each WI runs every so slightly differently whilst still remaining true to the values of the in providing women with educational opportunities and the chance to build new skills, to take part in a wide variety of activities and to campaign on issues that matter to them and their communities. We are an informal yet structured group and pride ourselves on being welcoming to all women.
Each WI branch is run by a committee, members who put extra time into the group in order to plan meetings, organise the group and who have responsibility for good management of the affairs of the group. The committee is elected each April at our birthday meetings, and any member of the branch is welcome to join the committee.
We try and arrange a lively and interesting programme for members and have had meetings ranging from speakers from the Nottinghamshire Archeology Department to cookery demonstrations from the Secret Kitchen project to a stand up comedian. Having a broad range of members means that we have a wide variety of tastes and interests so there’s bound to be something you like.
I love Sherwood WI because there’s always wine, good company and something new to learn. I’ve met lots of interesting women here and made some good friends.
